Revelations Ahead! The Latest Cover Reveals (4)

Hola!
So many awesome covers have been popping up lately!
Here are a few to be retired
from my Goodreads
 'No Cover Image Yet'  folder.

Greenwillow Press

Woo hoo, there is a cover! I CANNOT wait to read this last book in the series!
Now.  Is it just me or does the girl on all the covers look like Alannis Morisette?

Isn't it ironic, don'tcha think??

Little, Brown BYR

This cover with the clone-ish girls kinds creeps me out....

Aw. I just love this! It has a totally fun,  60's vibe, doesn't it?
And I really like the PINK:)

She needs to stop, drop and roll. Quickly.

So romantic!
It took a couple of glances before I saw the skull in the bottom frieze.
I also like how the red band pops and matched her lipstick.
Very nice design-wise.

Dial BYR

I like the graphic nature in this design.
But it's kind of boring.

Sourcebooks Fire

Dude, I am in LOVE with the person who designs all of Kenneally's covers!
I asked her about it and she said Sourcebooks handles it all.
I think each and every one is PERFECT:)

Harlequin Teen

Yawn.
You know, I really like all the symbols and stuff in the "Blood of Eden" text but this cover is so blah to me.

Harper Teen

Oh. My. Gosh!
I LOVE this. How scary does this book look, sound and feel?
And that tagline! I cannot wait to read this one.

Random House BYR

I don't know.
There is just too much going on right in the middle of the cover.
Too much circular STUFF. And the weird lit up eyes of the guy in back is just...weird.

St. Martin's Griffin

This book sounds really cool and I do like the cloud covered moon, but this one is kind of plain otherwise.
Although that guy does have nice shoulders...

THIS is my favorite of the entire bunch. From an artistic standpoint I just LOVE it.
The tagline font is way too small, imo,
but I totally, totally dig it.
"Who do you blame?"
Another book I can't wait to check out.

by Helen Douglas

Bloomsbury Children's Books

I don't like it.
Body-less heads perfectly centered and that strange neon sign-like font.
And let's not forget to throw a few birds into the sky as well.
Yuck.

by Dawn Metcalf

Harlequin Teen

Hmm.
It just reminds me of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

by Kelley Armstrong
August 20, 2013
Sphere

Another yawn.
And because it's Kelley Armstrong, a prolific, best selling author, her name totally overpowers the title.
Looks like the title is
"Kelley Armstrong 's Omens. "
Like she is suddenly spouting off her own ominous portents or something.
Or like the most ominous of all ominous signs are the
"Kelley Armstrong Omens"
And what is with that tagline at the bottom?
I only know that's what it is because the series is, according to Goodreads, entitled Cainesville. Strange.

Putnam Juvenile

I am not really a fan of floating girls, they look so... I don't know...dead.
And actually I have not been a fan of this author.
But I think I am going to try this new series out.

Dial BYR

Because I am a science dork I actually like this a lot. And I like the tagline as well.
"There are no accidents."
It's another dystopian (sigh...) but it still piques my interest.

Tor Teen

I like the design of this one but I think the author's name should have been put somewhere else,
at the top or the bottom, not just above the center of the frame.
It looks more like where a title should go.
I really like the drop of blood falling in the water though:)

Harcourt Children's Books

This looks spooky and atmospheric, which is great considering the subject.
It actually feels more like an older design. Something you might have found during the 70s or 80s.

I really can't stand this.
I just don't dig covers with model's in poses like that. Here is another:

Blech.

by Katherine Longshore

Viking Juvenile

It's pretty, (not as pretty as Gilt) but I think  Christina got it right when she said
the model looks more like Catherine of Aragon than Anne Boleyn.

I know this looks a bit hastily photoshopped but I really like it. I like the water in the background
(the MC is a swimmer) and I like how moody it feels. And the boy actually LOOKS like a teenage boy!

Chronicle Books

Whoa. That chick looks PISSED. This books sounds awesome:)

by Teri Brown

Balzer + Bray

Why, hello there Nicole Kidman!

Actually that cover is pretty striking!
All the black and her magenta lips and her crazy no-way-is-that -her-real-eye-color.
But I am not such a fan of the text font. Too Wizard of Oz-y for my taste.

by Margaret Stohl

Little, Brown BYR

This one kind of looks like Alannis too! What's up with that?

by Elizabeth Ross
June 11, 2013
Delacorte BYR

Very Art Nouveau! But wow, she just looks all tuckered out doesn't she? And pale. And bored.

by Chris Columbus and Ned Vizzini

This is a great example of a middle grade cover, isn't it? I mean what 10-12 year old boy wouldn't want to read THAT? :)

I love Steampunk. All the clockwork and automaton stuff.
I love the font and London in the background  but it feels like something is MISSING.
But check out the title of this series! Amusmentists? What's THAT? I can't wait to find out.

by Holly Black
September 17, 2013
Little, Brown BYR

I am super excited to read this because
a) it's Holly Black and
b) it's vampires done by Holly Black:)
Cover-wise it's only "meh" for me.
I like the creepy tattoo-ish script on her wrist but I wish there a little more oomph, you know?

So, what are your favorites?
Any good ones that I missed?
Let me know and I'll add them in:)

  1. LOL -- you see Alanis everywhere.
Love your comments. Agree with some.
I think the model on Tarnish looks like Salma Hayek.

    1. I was feeling very Alannis that day, I guess:)

Yes, she definitely is channeling Salma Hayek's Frieda Kahlo look (sans the unibrow:)

  2. Whoa, this is a huge round-up of covers--thanks for the pretty pictures! I hadn't seen some of these, and it's a relief that that dull brown/olive blank book goes away on GoodReads for all, hah.

FALCONER does sound awesome, but after waiting for this book for over a year, I have to admit I'm disappointed by the cover. It seems awkward to me, with colors similar to the TMI series but without the...mood.

    1. Yeah, the cover of The Falconer is a bit strange, but I believe the book is a historical fantasy, so in that light the cover seems to represent both genre's (at least imo:)

It really does sound like a great read, and I hope the MC is as fierce INSIDE the book as she looks on the OUTSIDE;)

    1. It IS a gorgeous cover, I'm super excited about all the new YA historical fiction coming out this year! Are you familair with this site, Leanna?

I have found a bunch of great YA Hist. Fiction/ Fantasy titles here:)

  4. I love the cover for The Bitter Kingdom although, really, The Eternity Cure has a TERRIBLE cover. I also think I liked the simple, but catchy, "fake" cover that The Falconer had on GR. It seems like there's too much going on in that image and I just feel like looking away because it screams CHAOS! Still, I cannot wait to read it. Great post, Heather! :)

    1. I was a fan of the placeholder/ fake cover for The Falconer too! Ha! It is a chaotic scene! It looks like a scene out of Pirates of the Caribbean to me!

  5. Wow there are some terribad covers out there, but some of these are great! I hadn't heard of The Oathbreaker's Shadow before, but it sounds awesome. I really hope it's decent male protagonist YA fantasy, because that is really something the world is lacking atm. I don't mind that cover as much as you either, it just reads very fantasy to me. I was actually disappointed in The Coldest Girl in Coldtown...I just expected something that didn't look so cheap? I really like the Find Me cover, but it looks so reminiscent of the cover for Robin Wasserman's The Walking Dark. Basically the same thing.

    1. It IS a very Fantasy-esque, almost Sci-Fi/ Fantasy-esque, cover on The Oathbreaker's Shadow! I'm glad you like it, Heidi! It just feels too busy to me. But the book definitely sounds intriguing!

I have never seen the cover of Wasserman's The Walking Dark, but YES! It is almost exactly the same! A definite cover doppelganger! Thanks for bringing it to my attention, H:)

  6. I really like the cover of Racing Savannah, I think it's the yellow! I quite like The Originals cover too - although it is kind of creepy at the same time, and I know it's exactly the kind of book I would have inexplicably hidden when I was a kid (I had a thing about creepy staring girls on book covers). The Mistwalker reminds me of a kind of Famous Five-type cover, I really like it. I have to say that After Eden is probably my least favourite out of these, it just looks a little bit tacky and thrown together. Great post!

    1. I love Racing Savannah's cover too! The yellow boots are AWESOME! What I love most about all of Kenneally's covers are the missing faces. I love that cover's leave the character's appearance to the reader's imagination:)

  7. How did I completely miss this post until you mentioned it? I love how snarky you are here, giving us your feedback on all the covers. I wonder if the two Alannis covers are the same model? Also, I'm getting excited to read the GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS series, maybe I'll have to start it sooner rather than later. At least the last book comes out this year! Several of these I haven't ever heard of, so I will have to go through them more slowly. Racing Savannah actually looks the best to me out of all Miranda Kenneally's books.

    1. If you like snarky cover comments there is somebody out there who does a much better job than I: Christina at A Reader of Fictions. She does a regular feature called Cover Snark and it is HILARIOUS. She holds NO punches! Here is a link to her latest:

I would LOVE for you to start the Fire and Thorns series, L! It is SO good. And I have super high hopes for the final book in the series!! (No presssure!)

  8. This is so great because I see a lot of unknown-to-me titles here too. The biggest things that stick out to me are: I am sad about Julie Kagawa's cover redesigns because of the shjeer blandness of them and you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about Miranda Kinneally's covers from Sourcebooks - they are SO cohesive and co great. Everytime you see one, you know or at least have a good idea that THAT is HER book and I LOVE THAT about her brand. Whoever is in charge of her marketing team is a genius to have done her stuff that way. Janet Gurtler's books are the same way - a cohesive theme - AND also by Sourcebooks. They aren't the most awesome, but you can tell or at least you think of Janet Gurtler when you see them. Hats off to Sourcebooks. And I wonder if it is the same person doing the marketing/design for those authors? Anyway, that's a sidenote.
